AC Hotel Portsmouth Art Gallery
Inner Space by Alfredo Alea

This piece was created as an exploration into the mixture of art and mathematics. There is a branch of mathematics called 'Topology' that deals with the many ways a surface can be manifested and manipulated. This sculpture is an exploration I took into minimal surfaces and how I could shape these ideas into bronze. I have an affinity to these shapes because they also have a biological analogue. These surfaces permeate not just the abstract mathematical concept but the paths taken by plants and animals. Which came first, the form or the thought of it? I created this piece to meditate on that.
